Sensory Diet Starter

Sensory regulation, body awareness, arousal modulation
All ages, customize to child
Materials: Timer, pillow or couch cushions, wall space, a backpack with books
  1. Morning routine (5 minutes before school): 10 wall push-ups β†’ carry backpack with books across the room 3 times β†’ jump in place 20 times
  2. After school (before homework): Crash into couch cushions 5 times β†’ bear walk down the hall 3 times β†’ squeeze a stress ball for 1 minute
  3. Bedtime wind-down: Deep pressure massage on arms and legs β†’ deep breathing (breathe in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4) β†’ weighted blanket
  4. Track what helps: note which activities improve attention or reduce meltdowns
A "sensory diet" isn't a food diet β€” it's a scheduled program of sensory activities your OT helps design. Use this as a starting point, then work with your child's OT to customize based on their specific sensory profile.

Calming Strategy Toolkit

Self-regulation, emotional regulation, interoception
Materials: A shoebox or small bag, items based on options below
  1. Build a "calm-down kit" together: let your child choose 3–5 items that feel soothing to them
  2. Options: stress ball, putty, small fidget toy, lavender-scented item, smooth stone, chewy tube, noise-canceling earmuffs

Heavy Work Circuit

Proprioceptive input, alerting/calming, body awareness
Materials: Couch cushions, heavy backpack, wall, floor space
  1. Station 1 (1 minute): Wall push-ups β€” hands flat on wall, push in and out. Count to 10.
  2. Station 2 (1 minute): Carry a heavy backpack (loaded with books) from one end of the house to the other. 3 trips.

Materials: Paper and pen or printed checklist
